May will mark three months for me as the newest “Mary” to join Action Mary. It’s gone by fast. While there’s no doubt it has been quite the ride filled with spots of stormy weather–actual snowstorms did, in fact, shut down all of Seattle in February–it’s been a good one.
Since the start, I was instantly welcomed as part of the team and everyone made sure that I felt comfortable. Over the past few months, there’s been a lot to learn about public relations, branding, creative processes, and what they should be. While I, of course, have so much more to learn, I have already gained great insight into how these business practices can and should be used for good. A major part of what we do here at Action Mary is to raise awareness of brands that aim to do good in the world and who bring about real change in society.
Yet talking about it isn’t enough. We must do our work with the passion and intent needed to make a change. Thankfully, there is no shortage of passion or dedication here. Something I noticed right from the start was how heartfelt all my coworkers were about their jobs. They aren’t here for just another paycheck, they’re here because they want to be. Because they believe in what we’re doing. This is how we start the journey of progress.
I was told that no two days here are the same, and I now know that this is more than true. Every day we are constantly addressing new problems or opportunities presented to us by our clients. As a smaller firm, this means that everybody must give their 100% daily. We take pride in the fact that we can switch focus from project to project while taking on new tasks each day, and still meet deadlines and deliver impact. Yet this is only made possible because of our skill of leaning on each other, effectively using our collective strengths to create quality work. Teamwork tends to be a buzzword in business today but I have learned through experience that it is not always something easily done everywhere. However, teamwork here at Action Mary is one of our greatest strengths.
Sure, we’re a crazy bunch from all walks of life, but we all share the same goal, doing good through communications. And what’s the point of doing anything if you’re not passionate? Our time is limited so we must make the most of it by engaging in areas we actually care about. This drive is what pushes us to become experts in the field. We dedicate hours to doing research about our clients and everything relevant to them so that we can produce the best possible content on their behalf.
I am extremely thankful to be a part of this company and I look forward to learning more with each coming day. This has been a wonderful journey, I’m sure the challenges in the months to come will help us be even better. Onward we go.
